PR chief works in fields

Warangal:

The Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi got a few lessons in agriculture in the cotton fields of a remote village, Rupi Reddy Palle, in the Maoist-affected Regonda mandal on Monday. For the first time during his yatra in the district, Chiranjeevi got down from his vehicle and ventured into the cotton fields, surprising the women farmers working there. The women flocked around their matinee idol and began narrating their woes. Ms Panchagiri Radha complained that they were not getting a competitive price for their cotton. She also pointed to the irregular power supply.

Ms Vannala Rani told Chiranjeevi that they were losing money to spurious seeds and pesticides. Mr Chiranjeevi blamed their woes on the government. “The suicides among cotton farmers were really painful. Is it such a big problem to overcome,” he asked.

Chiru vows to help farmers

Warangal:

Praja Rajyam (PR) president Chiranjeevi got his first lessons in agriculture in the cotton fields of a remote village, Rupi Reddy Palle, in the Maoist-dominated Regonda mandal of the district on Monday.

For the first time during his visit in the district, he got down from his vehicle and ventured into the cotton fields, where the women working there were pleasantly surprised by the unexpected visitor. The women narrated their woes and asked him to take the mantle of the state and do “justice” to them.

A woman farmer, Ms Panchagiri Radha, complained of low price for their cotton produce and irregular power supply to farming sector. Another farmer, Ms Vannala Rani, told the actor that the spurious seeds and pesticides were causing losses to them. Chiranjeevi, who was obviously briefed about the Regonda that had seen highest number of suicides among cotton farmers, criticised the government for its lack of commitment to solve the problems. “The suicides among the cotton farmers were really painful. Is it such a big problem to overcome? What all the government need is humanity and dedication to help the farmers,” he said.

On tardy progress of the Devadula project, Chiranjeevi alleged that the project was witnessing leakages due to the low quality works. Taking potshots at his critics, who termed him as ignorant of farmers issues, he said that one need not come from a farmer’s family to understand their problem. “I have heart enough to show humanity to the farmers and dedication to solve their problems,” he said.

PR blames Congress on T

Warangal:

Praja Rajyam (PR) founder Chiranjeevi on Monday took the offensive to the Congress camp on the separate Telangana issue. Annoyed at the repeated protests by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) activists, who demanded him to come out more clearly on the vexed issue, Chiranjeevi said that it was the ruling Congress that lacked the clarity on the separate state issue.

Addressing a massive gathering at Parkal town, he said that he was having greater clarity on the separate state demand than the ruling Congress, which he said was duping the region’s people for the past four years. “I have clearly said that I am in favour of the formation of the separate state. My party will not oppose the bill for the purpose if moved by the Centre,” he reiterated.

Getting angry at the repeated protests, which turned a bit humiliating in this citadel of the TRS, Chiranjeevi said that he knew of the aspirations of the people of the region and he knew the prevailing sentiment for the separate state here.

“I am the one who said that this region was not backward instead it was made backward by the rulers. I am the one who termed the separate state demand as the issue of the self-respect of the region’s people,” he added.  But still the skeptics demand more clarity from him, he said and added that this was totally uncalled for.

“It is the Congress that came to the power riding on the separate state sentiment wave by joining hands with the TRS. Now it is the ruling party which failed to make its stand clear still and instead it was pointing an accusing finger at me,” Mr Chiranjeevi said.

He exhorted the people to question the Congress and the Central government for going back on its promise to carve out a separate state.

Referring to the corruption, the PR president said that from pensions to projects there is a total corruption in the functioning of this government and cited the urban housing and pensions scam in the city.

State in grip of yatra fever

Hyderabad:

Massive public meetings and yatras have become the order of the day in Andhra Pradesh as election fever grips the political parties. The competition is growing by the day. Megastar Chiranjeevi’s massive public meeting at Tirupati for the launch of the Praja Rajyam has prompted other parties to organise similar shows to display their strength by mobilising lakhs of people.

It is estimated that about five lakh people attended Chiranjeevi’s first public meeting on August 27. On that day, Tirupati was flooded with people from all parts of the State. They came in trucks, buses, trains, cars and two wheelers. The frenzied reaction of crowds when Chiranjeevi came on stage was brought to drawing rooms by television channels. The think-tanks of the Congress and the Telugu Desam immediately got down to work to organise similar mega meetings.

The Congress arranged an “interaction” between party chief, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, and two lakh women self help group members at Tirupati on September 12, and billed it the largest gathering of women.  Similarly, the public meeting of the Congress at an 80-acre site on the outskirts of Anantapur town was a equally grand show. Around five to seven lakh people participated in it.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, was all praise for the ministers Mr N Raghuveera Reddy, Mr J.C. Diwakar Reddy and Mr Botsa Satyanarayana, who arranged the programme.  Not to be outdone, Telugu Desam is planning to conduct a mega Yuva Garjana in Guntur on November 5.

The party supremo, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, has reportedly directed his colleagues to make it grander than the shows organised by Chiranjeevi and Congress. The target is 10 lakh people.  Meanwhile, the senior TD leader, Mr Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, has alleged that the government was trying to put obstacles at every step for the proposed TD rally. “We asked the APSRTC to provide sufficient number of buses but they are reluctant. However, they did the same for the Congress,” he said. “They are insisting on payment of Rs 10,000 as deposit for every bus. Similarly, we sought three trains to ferry people from different parts of the state. Despite these hurdles, we will present a grand show.”

The senior Congress leader and former PCC chief, Mr P. Narsa Reddy, admitted that all parties are being compelled to put up mega shows.  Parties are pumping in crores of rupees to mobilise people, to put up colourful hoardings, banners, flags, and to rent thousands of vehicles, not to speak of giving out advertisements in newspapers and TV channels. “Earlier, we just had to give free food and water to people,” said Mr Narsa Reddy. “Now you have to shell out cash like one pays for daily wagers along with providing other facilities.”

But the moot question is whether such meetings and road shows persuade people to vote for a party.  “It is a million dollar question,” said Dr Mysoora Reddy. “Ultimately, you don’t know what goes on in the minds of people.”

Crowds don’t come cheap

Hyderabad:

On an average a political party needs to spend about Rs 10 crore to mobilise five lakh people for a public meeting.  Though no party is willing to go on record about this for obvious reasons, they all concur with this figure in private.

“On an average, a party has to spend Rs 150 per worker,” said a senior leader. “This includes wages, food and water. The transportation cost is not included. If you add transportation cost, it goes up to Rs 200 per head, depending on the mode of transport.”  Nowadays, parties have to hire people for meetings. The era of people walking kilometres to hear speeches of their favourite leaders is long gone. “The cost of cutouts, banners, hoardings, advertisements and other paraphernalia is apart from this,” said the leader.

Huge amounts were spent on Chiranjeevi’s public meeting at Tirupati. It is also said that the Congress spent Rs 15 crore for Mrs Sonia Gandhi’s meetings at Tirupati and Anantapur. As many as 4,000 APSRTC buses were hired for the public meeting besides 1,000 transport buses from Karnataka. Interestingly, the entire crowd was mobilised from within the district.  Similarly, the Congress reportedly spent Rs 9 crore to hire buses for Tirupati SHGs for the “interaction” with Mrs Sonia Gandhi.  And after doing all this, parties surely want the media to report huge figures.

Cops generally calculate crowds by estimating that 5,000 people can stand on an acre of open land. For instance, the public meeting at Anantapur was held in an 80 acre plot. This means that there were around four lakh people there and around two lakh in the surrounding roads.

Congress irked by Chiranjeevi

Hyderabad:

The Congress on Monday took strong exception to the Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi accusing it of taking up construction of new irrigation projects for kickbacks. The party spokespersons, Mr Paladugu Venkat Rao, and Mr Tulsi Reddy, challenged Chiranjeevi to demand the cancellation of new irrigation projects.

“If he has the guts, let him oppose construction of new dams. Irrigation projects are the life line of the people. Such baseless allegation only shows his immaturity,” Mr Venkat Rao said. Referring to Chiranjeevi’s charge that there was no development under the Congress rule, he said the actor should ask the people.  “What does he know about development sitting in Hyderabad? He earned over Rs 500 crore acting in films, but he did not help a single film worker. He does not know the hard work done by workers of Singareni Collieries,” he remarked.

Citing the example of late Tamil actor M.G. Ramachandran who spent a fortune on poor, he asked in what way Chiranjeevi helped the film industry and people at large.  Mr Tulsi Reddy criticised Chiranjeevi for alleging that the Congress ignored old projects and took up new ones for kickbacks. “Can anyone oppose construction of Polavaram, Pulichintala, Pothireddypadu and other irrigation projects?,” he said. The Congress spokespersons said that though aerated drinks were harmful, Chiranjeevi promoted them to make some quick money.

PR thinks TD spied on party

Hyderabad:

The Praja Rajyam is suspecting the Telugu Desam’s hand in the recent sting operation carried out over Chiranjeevi’s in-camera meeting, where the PR chief was reportedly giving directions to his party men to spy on the movements of the politicians in the PR.According to the party sources, after a thorough inquiry, the PR camp managers came to the conclusion that one employee in the PR headquarters is being used as a spy by the TD leadership. “The in-charge of administration in the PR central office carried out this operation.

This person earlier worked in a key position in the NTR memorial trust. We suspect his role. Our investigation revealed that these sort of secret recordings were carried out since from the inception of our party. But, the TD leaders selectively leaked the recent one for the media only to keep its flock together,” a senior leader in the PR said.

Chiranjeevi vows to resolve farmers’ woes

STRIKING A RIGHT CHORD WITH RYOTS

Regonda (Warangal):

It looked like Chiranjeevi was back to his good old days of film world, albeit briefly. The supporters present there were all pumped up and the farmer-friendly Chiru was more than willing to dance to their tunes. Except that it wasn’t a scene from his films, but a a cotton field in Rupireddypalli village in this mandal — where his histrionics were in full flow on Monday.

The Prajarajyam party chief during the second leg of his Praja Ankita Yatra in Warangal district stopped at the cotton field and interacted with the farmers, much to the delight of the passers-by and some of the farmers themselves. They lustily clapped when Chiranjeevi said the farmers’ problems could have easily been overcome had the governments worked with dedication, taking a dig at YSR’s ‘pro-ryot’ mantra.

The ryots went gaga when the star politician alleged that the government was neglecting serious issues like spurious seeds, pesticides and fertilizers that have forced the farmers lose their crops in a large extent.

He alleged that though the government had announced an MSP of Rs 3,000 per quintal of cotton, the farmers are getting only Rs 2,000.

“Who is to blame? The middlemen are taking away the remaining amount and forcing the farmers into a debt trap,” he hollered evoking an instant applause from the farmers. “The fertilizer supply has gone haywire as the ruling party leaders have diverted them to their followers,” he alleged.

When a woman farmer, P Radha, complained that she sustained injuries in the police lathicharge when she went to get the fertilizers at Regonda mandal headquarters recently, the new ‘messiah of the farmers’ promised her that all her woes would vanish once the Prajarajyam party is elected to power in the 2009 general elections.

“Wait for another four months and all your problems would be wiped out,” he thundered amidst cheers from the farmers.

A not her farmer, Nagapuri Vijaya, urged the actorturned-politician to come to the power and solve their problems. Responding to her demand, he said that he entered politics only to solve their problems.

As the actor’s convoy sped past, Vijaya had only tears of joy. “I have interacted with the megastar and am too overwhelmed to say anything. I only hope he would do something for us,” she said.

Earlier, addressing a road show meeting at Parkal, Chiranjeevi turned emotional and blamed the Congress for lacking clarity on the separate Telangana state issue. “Some people are demanding me to make my stand clear on the Telangana state issue. I have clearly stated that I support the formation of the separate Telangana in tune with the aspirations of the people of the region,” Chiranjeevi said, taking a dig at the Congress leaders.

Road Show draws crowds

Warangal:

The Praja Rajyam party founder, Chiranjeevi, proved his crowd pulling charisma by attracting a massive number of people at all his roadshow meetings here on Sunday night.

But what disappointed the crowds were his uninspiring speeches that kept the crowd especially the youths raising ‘Jai Telangana’ slogans, instead of the ‘Jai Chiranjeeva’ slogans as expected.

The actor-turned-politician also received a traditional Telangana welcome with bonalu, batukammas, and was also given the now famous typical TRS protests all along his way.

The 10-km long way from Hasanparthy to Hanamkonda were filled to the brim with thousands of people mostly students, and youth standing on either side of the roads. The enthusiastic crowds, who were eager to have a glimpse of their matinee idol waited patiently for almost four hours all along the way. The city was into a virtual festive mood, with thousands including women and children thronging the junctions and waving to the new politician.

Addressing the first roadshow meeting at Hasanparthy, Chiranjeevi tried to connect himself to the youth by stating that the youth were part of him since his movie days and termed their support crucial. “Looking at the enthusiastic youth, I feel like dancing as a cine hero. But you have all ordered me to take a plunge into politics to cleanse the system. I was entrusted with a more serious job now than dancing,” he said to the cheering crowds.

Chiranjeevi tried to raise the sentiment of the people towards the historic importance of Warangal and its roots to the great Kakatiya rule.  The Praja Ankita Yatra tour of the actor-turned-politician entered the city at around 9.30 pm.

Chiru criticises state on Babli

Karimnagar:

The Praja Rajyam president, Chiranjeevi, highlighted the woes of the middle-class women in managing their family budgets due to meagre monthly incomes and ever-escalating prices of essential commodities including vegetables in a bid to win over their hearts in Karimnagar.

Addressing a gathering mostly comprising women and youth here on Sunday, Chiranjeevi turned his heat on the government charging it with failing to contain the price rise and thrusting an unbearable burden on the housewives. “Despite curtailing all your joys and saving all your earnings, you are still struggling to cope with the high prices and feed your children,” he remarked. “Praja Rajyam emerged out of your strong aspirations to change this undesirable trend,” he said.

Underlining the importance of the potential of vote to bring about change in politics, Chiranjeevi asked the youth mainly his fans to focus on enrolment of their names in the voters’ lists.  In Manakondur, Chiranjeevi alleged that the state government failed to stop the construction of Babli project by Maharashtra government posing grave threat to the Sriramsagar Project (SRSP), the lifeline of Telangana.

PR takes on Naidu remarks

Hyderabad:

Taking strong exception to the remarks made by the Telugu Desam chief, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Mr Chiranjeevi that the film actor was even not in a position to read out the prepared script, the Praja Rajyam spokesperson, Mr Parakala Prabhakar, said it was not fair for a person who ruled the state for nine years to pass such comments. It shows the TD chief’s political bankruptcy, he added.

Opposing Mr Naidu’s remarks that Chiranjeevi lacked clarity on key issues, Mr Prabhakar said, “We are clear on every issue. It is the TD which lacks clarity now. In fact, the Opposition was in confusion over who should be the chief ministerial candidate. They are wracking their brains on whom to choose between Mr Naidu and actor Mr Balakrishna.”

Chiranjeevi’s show houseful in Warangal

Milling crowds wait patiently to catch a glimpse of the actor-turned-politician

Local leaders compete with each other to accord a rousing welcome to the PR president

Chiranjeevi promises to check rising prices of essentials if elected to power

WARANGAL:

Like a torrent, people poured on to the roads. The crowds spilled all over, from the trees, building and traffic dividers. Cutting across party affiliations, people thronged to catch a glimpse of Praja Rajyam leader Chiranjeevi when he arrived in Warangal district for his three-day tour on Sunday evening.

With great excitement people gathered at every traffic junction several hours before to see their matinee idol and listen to his message. The whole town was colourfully decorated with festoons and huge glow sign boards featuring photographs of Chiranjeevi and local leaders. Under the glowing sign boards, people gathered at several places all along the route from Hasanparthy to Hanamkonda chowrastha. They virtually blocked the road preventing vehicular traffic. The police who were in large numbers had a tough time with the crowds swelling each passing moment.

As the arrival of Mr. Chiranjeevi was delayed by several hours, the crowds grew with people from surrounding villages on either side of the roads making a beeline to see and listen to their favourite actor.

Youth came in great numbers while the women appeared thin. Local leaders tried their best to show their strength by mobilising people and putting up large banners and party flags at every possible point en route.

‘Vote for change’

Karimnagar Staff Reporter adds:

Blaming the State government for the escalation of prices of all essential commodities and burdening the people, Chiranjeevi promised to end their woes if Praja Rajyam is elected to power.

Launching his last lap of the four-day Praja Ankhita yatra in Karimnagar town, he also flayed the State government for failing to provide minimum facilities such as proper roads, drinking water, RTC buses, uninterrupted power supply etc to the citizens. Addressing the women, who attended in large numbers at the road show near Kaman crossroads, he said that they were facing several hardships to run their families. People were facing problems due to the inefficient performance of the State government and the time has come for changing the government, he said.

Quality services

He vowed to would provide quality education and health services and strives to bring about a social change.

“Why elect the same person when there is no change”, he questioned and called upon the people to give a chance to Praja Rajyam to bring the ‘change’ in the society.

Referring to the presence of large number of youth, he asked them to enrol themselves in the voters list and play a responsible role. Hailing the communal harmony in Karimnagar district, he said that he would accord priority in the allocation of party tickets in the elections and elect Muslims as public representatives.

He also promised to allocate 10 acres of land to Idgah in Karimnagar town after attaining power.

Praja Rajyam flays package for weavers

‘Either Congress leaders did not read our Sircilla Declaration or did not understand it’

HYDERABAD:

Taking exception to continued criticism heaped on the Praja Rajyam party (PR) president K. Chiranjeevi, spokesman Parakala Prabhakar lashed out at government for not properly understanding the problems facing weavers in Sircilla.

“Either the Congress leaders did not read our Sircilla Declaration or did not understand it, otherwise Handlooms or Textiles Minister P. Sabita Reddy must have simply read out the matter prepared by someone down the line in the department”, he said.

“Does she know that the workers are paid a measly 62 paise a metre of cloth they produced?” he asked, describing Government’s package for weavers as a ‘farce’.

He recalled the Minister saying the government had established a counselling centre to help instil confidence among weavers.

It existed for a while now and was being run by a voluntary agency which was working in other sectors.

The NGO did not get any government assistance.

A research scholar at the London School of Economics and member of the PR’s Regional Issues Study Committee, M. Pramod Reddy pointed out that government had claimed to have released Rs. 6.84 lakh to help an estimated 3,500 weavers. He regretted that about 35,000 weavers needed assistance. This move too, was only after Mr. Chiranjeevi’s visit to Sircilla, and spending time with the suffering weavers, he said.

Ad spending

The spokesman objected to the government releasing advertisements worth Rs.16 crore on the AP Formation Day. Mr. Pramod said the amount if pumped into Sircilla would have helped triple the earnings of weavers for a year.

PR to focus on social issues

KHAMMAM:

Mitra, official spokesperson of Praja Rajyam, said here on Sunday that the party was firm on focusing attention on issues of people such as illiteracy and poverty instead of indulging much in polemics. He was in the town to take stock of the arrangements on for the tour of the party president Chiranjeevi scheduled for November 5 and 6 and as part of this he closeted with the party district leaders for a while. Later talking to media persons, he said there was no ambiguity left in the party stand on the issue of Telangana. There were no differences in the party leadership on Telangana either. The Party chief had made the stand very clear time and again. He said the party would field only those candidates who enjoyed the support of masses.

PRP meet put off

The Mahila Sadassu of Praja Rajyam Party, scheduled to be held at Hotel Daspalla on Monday, has been postponed.

The fresh date of the women’s meet of the party will be announced later, according to PRP leader Ganta Srinivasa Rao.

Chiru criticises job cuts

Karimnagar:

Praja Rajyam (PR) president Chiranjeevi sought to strike an emotional chord with the coal miners of Singareni collieries saying he was also a kala karmikudu (worker of art) like them (nalla suryulu or black suns) and vowed to protect their jobs threatened by mechanisation.

Chiranjeevi addressed a series of roadshows in Godavarikhani, Centenary Colony, Kamanpur and other areas in the coal belt in an effort to muster the support of the coal miners as part of Praja Ankitha yatra on Saturday. He also paid floral tributes to the memorials of the coal miners who were killed in mine mishaps in 7 LEP and 8-A underground mines in the past.

Earlier, addressing a roadshow in Godavarikhani, Chiranjeevi alleged that the work force was reduced from about 1.10 lakh to 60,000 in the Singareni collieries due to the vigorous implementation of the mechanisation policies at the cost of the human resources. “Modernisation is inevitable but not at the cost of the jobs of the workers”, he said and added that the PR would accord top priority for human resources. Terming the coal miners as nalla suryulu engaged in exploration of nalla bangaram (coal) under most dangerous working conditions, he alleged that the government was collecting income tax from them as if they are white-collar employees. “It is most unjustified and the PR will exert pressure on the Central government to exempt you from the income tax,” he asserted.

You are prone to occupational hazards like lung related disorders but deprived of modern medicare facilities, he said. “I had enough of cinemas and I will now devote my entire time to serve you,” Chiranjeevi said.  He alleged that the Ramagundam-based FCI urea factory remained closed even as the farmers faced shortage of fertilisers due to the apathy of the government.

The government should immediately revive the FCI and set up Singareni mining university in Godava-rikhani, he demanded.  Youth, mainly the school students, were seen in large numbers at all the road shows of Chiranjeevi in the coal belt.
